The Disappearance of Richard Holland

Story Created: September 14, 2005

On the morning of July 1, 2005 Tim Holland knocked on the bedroom door of his son, Ricky to awaken him for school. This is something parents all over the world do each morning. Unfortunately, for the Holland’s this was the beginning of the nightmare that they are now living . When Ricky did not appear in the kitchen a while later, Tim went to his son’s room and this time opened the door. He found the window open Ricky’s bed pushed up underneath the window, Ricky’s backpack gone and more importantly, Ricky was gone.
Tim and Lisa Holland searched the neighborhood for their son and then at about 11:00 a.m. placed a call to the local police. Ricky had run off before according to Tim and Lisa Holland and it appeared from the looks of his room that it was the case this time. Law enforcement at one time had been called to search for Ricky and found that he had been hiding in a tree watching the search. Based on this past behavior, the police officers decided to play music up and down the street from an ice cream truck, Ricky loves ice cream, to try bring the boy out if he were hiding once again. This tactic did not work this time.

Ricky just had a birthday and he is now 8 years-old. He has been missing now for 2 months and 13 days. I wonder how a child that young can survive on the streets for this long. I wonder how a child this young who also has bipolar mood disorder, ADHD, and ODD can survive out on the streets for this long without the medications he was taking prior to his disappearance.
There are a few theories that come to my mind when thinking about this disappearance. One theory is that Ricky was kidnapped, perhaps by a sex offender in the area that took an interest in Ricky. Although this theory seems a bit unlikely because in some news reports I have read Ricky did not go outside to play, and he was being home schooled. Another reason I think this theory is not plausible is because the Holland’s have only lived in that home for approximately 6 months or less, and even the neighbors claim to not know the family well.
Theory two has me thinking that perhaps as law enforcement thinks, Ricky did in fact run away from home in the middle of the night and he met up with someone that did not have Ricky’s best interest in mind.
Theory three points to the parents. Tim and Lisa Holland adopted Ricky and his 3 other siblings. They have one biological child. All of Ricky’s siblings are younger than Ricky and it appears that Ricky was the only child with severe mental and behavior problems. Some details that stick out in my mind are that Lisa Holland claims she left for the store at approximately 8 a.m., forgot something and returned home, told Tim to wake Ricky up and then left again. It is not clear when she returned home from the “store” but what is clear from both Tim and Lisa Holland is that they both put Ricky to bed at 9:30 p.m. on the evening of June 30, 2005 and that is the last time either one of them saw Ricky.
Just suppose, as my daughter has theorized, Ricky snuck out of his bedroom window and climbed into the backseat of the car. Ricky’s mother drives to the “store” and Ricky climbs out of the car where ever the “store” was located. No, I can’t follow this theory. The reason I can’t follow this theory is because where ever Ricky is, if he is still alive, he is in a world of hurt emotionally and behaviorally. He would be drawing attention to himself. If he were still alive, I think at this point his actions would be scaring even him.
I believe Richard Holland is dead. I hope I am wrong.
I have a forum set up to discuss this case if you would like to be a part of that forum just click on the link to the right for the forum.

Happy Birthday Richard Holland

Story Created: September 8, 2005

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Richard, Happy Birthday to you, where ever you are.
Richard Holland has been missing since July 1, 2005. He celebrated his 8th birthday somewhere without his family. Two months and 7 days is a very long time for an 8-year-old child to be away from home.
I have written three blog entries about Richard Holland since he went missing.
It is still beyond my comprehension how he can still be out in the world somewhere without being noticed by someone.
Law enforcement served a search warrant on his parents on August 13th to dig up their backyard to make sure the report of them burying the family dog in the backyard was the truth. Detectives did find exactly that, the corpse of the family dog.
According to an article published Thursday, September 8, 2005 in the Lansing State Journal, police served another search warrant on the Holland’s. This time it was to secure a computer and two vehicles from the home.
A quote from one of the detectives:

“We’re looking for any evidence of the disappearance of Ricky, no matter what,” Ingham County sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Roy Holliday said outside the Holland’s’ Douglas Street home.

I hope Richard Holland had a Happy Birthday. I hate to think of the other alternative.
